very nice design

but I feel, as a logo, this has failed

maybe incorporating the rest of the text the same manner as the 'I' and the 'N' would make it look better. Also having the logo on a more solid background so that the design doesn't distract the logo?

I agree, however I think its in the wrong category, but logotypes I feel is closest.
This is exhibiting business identity, (and the logotype) though its the whole image representing what the company is about, not just the text.

As a standalone logo, the text would be accompanied by a silhouetted render of the bird.
